Andrew Stewart is a North Yorkshire-based artist who works on a variety of musical and visual projects. This year, he’ll release his 1.0.8. debut LP ‘DEVOTION,’ which will be available on Vinyl, CD, and digitally on March 18, 2022.

The moment ‘Devotion’ single starts playing you know this is going to be pure rock ‘n’ roll. This song has bluesy riffs, groovy drumming and bass, all of which are closely linked to singing and in the most positive way. It’s a beautiful production with dynamic structure, surprises and wide range of influences.

The ‘Devotion’ LP was made in collaboration with musician and producer Jason Odle, as well as a number of other talented musicians when they started working together in 2021.

A few words from Stewart about the album:

“A lot of hard work and laughs have gone into the making of the album, which has involved a growing number of musicians, including Dave Dunn-Birch and Joe Roughton on brass, Scarlett and India Stewart – backing vocals, and the beautiful playing of cellist Alex Marshall.”

BEHIND THE MUSIC

Stewart also tells us that in late 2020, he got very ill with possible arsenic poisoning but when medical tests came back, they revealed a far more serious underlying condition. But he was lucky and has successfully completed a year-long program of intensive chemo-therapy, radio-therapy, and surgery. After this experience, time became more valuable to Andrew, motivating him to do more creatively. He’s doing the right thing, he’s doing it well and RED Rock Magazine’s staff is wishing him good health and bright future with his music.

5 Questions with Andrew Stewart - RED Rock Magazine

What’s the weirdest dream you ever had?

Andrew: “I have weird dreams every night. However the first one that came to mind was a dream I had a few years ago where I was walking along the edge of a canal with the brass section of what was to become ‘Magical Dave’ playing constantly in the background. The dream seemed to continue for hours as I visited old haunts from my past, went to a party, walked in the park: always with ‘Magical Dave’ trumpet section playing constantly in the background. When I awoke the brass section riff remained with me as an intense earworm for days until I had managed to complete the writing of the melodies and words. Strange days indeed.”

What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve done in your life?

Andrew: “Decided to take up flying. By nature I am rubbish at being organised or anything technical, and I decided to throw myself into a situation where I would be most terrified and uncomfortable, and would need to push myself to my limits. That was 15 years ago and I now have around 500 hours flying experience.”

What’s your favorite book or movie?

Andrew: “Love the film ‘Victoria’ which I watched recently. Filmed in one take. Its about a bunch of lively street lads who meet up with a single girl in a Berlin nightclub and they go on a bit of a spree. Love it! Otherwise anything by Quentin Tarantino (apart from Kill Bill) and a lot of the early 1920’s surrealist movies.”

Do you believe in fate, or do you think that things happen because of our decisions?

Andrew: “I didn’t believe in fate until fairly recently. Since then so many individual things and series of ‘coincidences’ have happened which if they weren’t true they would appear very bizarre. If it were to be scripted it would seem too ridiculous.
I think that without doubt our mindset affects us and those around us. Positivity and negativity are like magnets and they do attract things of the same type / nature. I have experienced so many people who have a negative mindset and continually seem to attract problems in their lives, and at the other end of the scale individuals who have a positive outlook on life and who attract good things to them and those around them. It takes hard work and I feel it best to keep away from those who look to find fault or enjoy a good moan about anything and everything. We all have big and small problems to deal with in life but it definitely helps if you look for the positive in any situation. I have two sayings that stay with me “The harder you work the luckier you become” and “We all die alone leaving behind the consequences of our actions”.”

What three items would you need to survive an apocalyptic zombie invasion?

Andrew:
1. A zombie mask so that I could blend in with real zombies when popping out to the shops or if I fancied nipping into the pub.
2. 2. A large wine cellar where I could hide and drink myself into a merry oblivion.
3. A bottle of absinthe. Most of the parties we have end up with a room full of zombies, and I find the best thing to clear the last of those to leave is to serve up a glass of absinthe. Kills everything!”
